 most exciting:
Grandma came
(check out Ty's concentration - every game of anything is a matter of life or death. Always.)

 most memorable:
how completely and over the moon thrilled the kids were that it was Jack's birthday.

most forgettable:
Jack's gifts (3 shirts because that's what he needed.  Really, a 5th child is in need of nothing. Nothing.
Especially NOT TOYS).

saddest moment:
when Jack pulled on the elastic string of his birthday hat, and it snapped back and left a welt on his cheek :(
No cute birthday hat pictures this year.

most sinfully delicious:
the cake obviously.  I truly believe I could wipe out half a pan of jello cake in one sitting. Jack was pretty impressed too.

most surprising:
the lump that formed in my throat as I gave Jack his birthday aftermath bath.
My baby is pushing toddlerhood.

Happy birthday Jack Jack! I've treasured every minute of our first year.

Yesterday I thought about the Duggars.  And the birthdays...and the wrapping paper...and the vast quantity of birthday cake that must be consumed by that family.  They might actually get tired of a good chocolate cake. How sad. Then I stopped feeling slightly birthdayed out and began enjoying our busy season - 4 birthdays between March 8 and May 1.  A little perspective always helps.

Yesterday we celebrated a freshly turned 3 year-old Lily, but since Ty's day slipped through the blogging cracks 5 weeks ago, it only seems right to start there.

Ty's eight now! He wanted a day on the baseball field with his buddies for his birthday. Hmm - imagine that.  It sounded perfect to me. Perfectly easy. An hour on the field (which was Reas' job) followed by presents and cake. He had a ball.

Then, of course a few weeks later, on Easter weekend, Ty had his baptism. Back in February of 2011, Ty comitted to finish reading The Book of Mormon before his baptism date. He did awesome. Very diligent.  Even when he was pooped out from a long day, he still read, sometimes as much as 5 chapters a day. He finished 2 weeks before his baptism. Way to go, kid! He really is a great boy.

We were so happy to have some family come in to town to support him.

That same weekend, we celebrated Reas' birthday.  But since he's pretty old now, we kept it low key, so as to not throw out his back or anything.  He said all he wanted was to watch the Dodger game together and eat nachos supreme on his birthday. I know. So romantically sweet.  Speaking of sweet- his cake sunk in the middle for some reason. So me, being the clever girl that I am, thought I'd double the frosting recipe which would fill in the cake canyon and no one would ever have to know that I'm not perfect. I made cooked frosting, which is basically fudge poured over your cake.  Doubled, that turned out to be more frosting than cake. That cake might just go down in history as the chocolate death cake. I'll just say, only a few of us were actually able to finish our piece - me being one of them.  Yeah, I know how to pack it in, baby. It's a great recipe. If you want to try it out, just know a single recipe is quite sufficient for a 9x13 pan.

Cooked Chocolate Frosting

1/4 C. cocoa powder
dash of salt
1C. sugar
1/4 C. milk
1/4 C. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Add all ingredients, except vanilla, to a medium pot and cook and stir over low heat. Bring to a boil. Boil one minute - do not stir. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla, and beat until thick. Pour over cooled cake.

And now on to Lily. I've said it before - 3 year-olds are the best!  Simplicity is appreciated, and they're excited about anything! By sheer coincidence, Reas' company alway gives a random day off in the spring. This year it was on Lily's birthday. It made her day extra special having him around when all the other kids were at school. We went to Denny's to get her free birthday breakfast. We're cool like that. While there, we discussed whether or not we'd have the guts to walk into Denny's with our 5 kids during the "kids eat free" hours.  Nope. We agreed we just couldn't do it.

After Denny's, we hopped on over to Dollar Tree where Lily picked out her own princess balloon because after all, that was one of the two things she asked for.  The other being chocolate cupcakes. See what I mean?  3 is all about the simple pleasures.

Currently, Lily loves letters. Obsessed actually.  Conversations in the car, revolve 100% around which letters she sees on signs.  A perfect Lily gift would have to involve letters. Maggie and I settled on ABC bean bags using old jeans and fabric scraps.  They're a hit...with everyone!  She's was pretty excited about her money and gift cards from grandparents too. Here we come, Target.

One more birthday to go and then we've got a little break until Jack's birthday.  Isn't that ridiculously crazy? I'm almost crying thinking about his birthday coming up in a few months.

How thoughtful of the Dodgers to celebrate Reas' birthday with opening day.
He is numbered among their most loyal fans, so it only seems the right thing to do.

Welcome to the party!

I know I said there'd be no more birthday posting. I lied. I forgot that we still had Claire's party coming up. I'll make it short and sweet.

So sweet in fact, you may get a sugar high just from reading.

We had a rousing game of pin the cherry and sprinkles on the icecream cone.

Followed by a game I call "Sprinkle Dump." Simply put, shake up your construction paper sprinkles and cherries, dump 'em out, watch the kids scramble to find one of each color, and then let them glue them on their bowls of icecream.

Maybe kind of lame as far as party games go, but I needed another icecream game. It was appropriately appreciated by a group of 4-5 year olds. That's all that matters.

Next, the highlight of the party. Create your own icecream sundae - only rule , don't tell your mom how many gummy bears, marshmallows, and brownie bites you consumed by 10:00 AM or she may not let you be Claire's friend anymore.

We all know who has the coolest mom now.

We did provide fresh strawberries for those kids who were watching their figures.

All the little cuties ate and ate and ate until all were adequately over-stuffed and then we sent them home...with more candy.

When Claire was born, the nurse said she had never seen a more beautiful newborn. Sure, she probably told all the moms that, but it was the only sensible thing that woman said all day, so you bet I'll always remember it.

I will never forget Claire's birth day 5 years ago. It was unforgettable for so many reasons, not all of them being good. That was the only labor where I was induced. For me, horrible. That was the only labor where my nurse was C.R.A.Z.Y. Seriously. Upon first being introduced to her, she rambled on about the excruciating migraine she had that day and how the ice pack she had strapped to her neck just wasn't working. Sorry lady. You're looking for sympathy in the wrong place. I'm going to have a baby today. Don't tell me about pain.

Then as she began hooking me up to all the monitors she started telling me this story about how the previous day a woman came in to give birth to her twins and when they hooked her up, they couldn't find either of the babies' heartbeats. They had both died. Um, yeah. No sane person would tell a laboring woman that story. Like I said, she was crazy.

After Claire's birth they gave me Lortab which I didn't know would cause me to hallucinate, throw up, and be so drowsy and out of it that I couldn't stay awake to breastfeed my newborn child for the first time. My sister Shelly stayed the night in the hospital with me because she was scared to leave me alone... or leave me alone with my baby. She would wake me up to feed Claire and actually had to hold Claire up to me for her to nurse. That night I rambled on about ants in my dinner and muu muus, having no clue what I was saying. Good times.

Don't worry, my story's not over yet. (And yes, I realize this is a sort of weird birthday post, but lately it's been weighing on my mind that I haven't recorded much in the way of my babies' birth stories.)

When I got home from the hospital, I was lucky enough to be the 1 in like 3000 women who experience post-epidural migraines. They're caused when spinal fluid leaks out around the spinal cord due to the way the epidural is administered. I'd rather be in labor any day. No meds can touch that pain. The Dr. said I could either wait out the pain (about a week) or go in to receive a blood patch which may or may not work. He said it could easily take mulitiple attempts. I chose the at home pain, mostly because the thought of having to get up off the couch and get to the hospital sounded too hard. Too painful.

After the nightmare ended, I was finally able to enjoy the fruits of my labor (he he). She was more than worth it. I was able to love on this beautiful baby girl who had come to our family. She is affectionate, sassy, sensitive, a cuddler beyond cuddlers, and always has something insightful to say, like "Mom, the floor's looking pretty dirty. Can I mop for you?"

She loves pink, princesses, icecream, sparkly things, clothes, new shoes, and playing with friends. She is full of life. Nearly every morning she wakes up and asks, "Am I going to see any of my friends today?" She's so darn cute I hate it if I have to disappoint her.

.

Claire is grateful. She's the only one of our kids who would regularly thank me after wiping their bums, or making them asparagus. She always remembers to thank me for the little things.

She's easily excited (like by a ring pop) as shown here:

She's a chocolate loving maniac just like her mom. She thought it would be really cool if she had birthday cupcakes that spelled out her name. Maggie and Ty helped out with that one. You have to look really hard hard to see it. The first one's a smiley face per her request.

We love our Clairebear! She has brought so much joy and happy craziness to our family.

Happy 5th to you! So glad you're mine.

Happy birthday to our big 2 year-old...

There has always been something special about this girl. I know she's going to go places. She knows it too.

She's never been one to back down without a fight, and she has always known what she's wanted. That's made for a wild ride these last 2 years.

While she won't be winning any prizes for being our easiest child, she has stretched me as a mom in ways the others never came close to doing. There have been tears and fears on both ends wondering if we'll make it through another day...or night.

We're both better because of it.

Of course, there have been so many good times too. Those get us through the rough patches.

If I'm being totally honest, I'm scared out of my mind about what she might have to teach me during this next year.

We can do it, Lily. We're in this together. We chose eachother a long time ago, and I know we're a family for a reason. We need eachother.

You keep flashing that smile and giving those tight neck hugs, and I'll do my best to understand you. I'll be your mom - your best friend.

Reas has forbidden all gift buying for his birthday this year, and so we've had to get a little creative.

Maggie and Ty made him a banner...

I attempted my first ever icecream cake.

Not saying I want to make a career out of this business, BUT...

dang, it was good!

The birthday boy was happy (and rather impressed)...

and the kids now think I'm an icecream genius.

On Friday, Reas and I are going to see "Defending the Caveman" down on the strip. Anyone heard anything about it? I've researched all the reviews online. It sounds like good wholesome fun, but you never know with Las Vegas entertainment. Reas got the tickets for free with his dedicated service to United Blood. Seriously, he is the most generous blood donator I know of. He has "baby blood," you know - the most pure kind, so they use it for infant blood transfusions.

And if that doesn't make a wife proud...well, it does. The only blood I've ever given has been taken by the OB tech and cost me much wooziness. I'm wimpy like that.

I do find it kind of funny that Reas is literally paying for his birthday outing with his own blood, but I'm just following the rules. I haven't spent a dime. Happy birthday, Reas!! We love you.
