Sometimes thrift stores nearly bring me to tears of joy. That's not all that hard to do, especially when I'm majorly hormonal, but today Savers' had me screamin' and dancin.'

$35.00 spent, which is a lot for me to spend at a thrift store on only clothes, but you wanna see what I brought home? I'm going to tell you either way, so humor me and say yes.

3 maternity shirts

1 school shirt for Maggie

1 pair of new flip flops for Ty (tags still in place!)

9 baby boy shirts/onesies (NINE!)

6 pairs of baby boy pants

It's been so long since we've had tiny boy clothes, I'm going crazy. The blues, browns, and lime greens, and all the lions and turtles and snails and puppies and dump trucks and monkeys have me gushing. Yes. I was definitely meant to have another boy.

For you visual people, take a look at the boyish baby cuteness.

And just because I'm a girl who likes to think about how much I saved rather than spent, I roughly estimated the value of all my purchases (everything. not just the baby stuff) based on brand and quality... easily $170.00. And that's being very moderate in my pricing.

So, THANK YOU to all you generous moms who donate all of your family's nearly brand new clothing (from stores that are too expensive for me to shop at regularly) off to the thrift store for me to sniff up.

To those women, I'm baking cookies and eating them in your honor.

I know it has been FOREVER since I've posted anything related to thriftiness, craftiness, or fun of that nature.  71 days in fact.  It's time. Reas took the day off work for Valentine's.  What?  He had a cold...he needed to rest.  So he stayed home and we finished up the work in the bathroom.  Very restful, and yes, it was totally romantic...it's a teeny bathroom.

I love my new bathroom!  The beadboard makes it feel so much bigger.  And I love how it all of the sudden makes everything else look a little better.  I still plan to paint the cabinet and hopefully get a new faucet, but it already looks a kazillion times better than before. Speaking of which, I have searched and searched for a before picture I thought I took, but can't find it, so just imagine very boring.

No longer so!

A year or so ago, I framed out the mirror.  That was super easy and made a huge difference.  The trim is just glued over the top of the mirror with liquid nails.  Shhh, don't tell.  I'm pretty sure that's not correct installation procedure, but who's looking.  I found the trim at Home Depot and I'm not even sure what it is exactly. It's plastic on the outside and this weird foamy stuff on the inside. It's very lightweight so the liquid nails has worked fine.

I'm rather proud of my accessorizing in here since it all cost about $8 total.

This flower box is one of my favorite thriftstore finds ever.  It hangs above the toilet. It was $1.99 at Goodwill, which generally speaking is a store that makes me fuming mad.  They get all their inventory for free and then charge incredibly outrageous prices.  Yes, I have strong feelings regarding stores that selfishly rip off thrifty shoppers.  However, every now and then it's possible to find a killer deal.

I ripped apart a mini flower arrangement that I got at Michael's at 75% off and used the tulips to fill the box.  Wadded up newspaper and Spanish moss keeps all the flowers in place.  It makes me happy every time I walk in.  Bathrooms should make you happy, ya know.  With everything that goes on in there, we may as well surround ourselves with a little beauty.

My container that holds lotion, extra hand towels, and air freshener is actually a $1.00 flower pot from D.I.  Come to think of it, I have a lot of  flower pots that have just about everything in them, but flowers.

I love my cute little bird prints.  The frames were .50 cents each from D.I. and I spray painted them to match. The pictures were cut out of greeting cards.  Voila!  Cheap and easy.

And since I have now shared a most private area of my home, we may as well move on to the trash.  Yes, even the waste basket came from D.I.  Is it not perfect for this crammed little spot?  Perfectly priced too...$1.00.

Funny enough, the one improvement in this bathroom that has undoubtedly changed my life for the better is the new real life toilet paper holder on the wall.  I've been 3 years without one, which in my book totally justified buying a new one.  I'm pretty sure I've never come across used toilet paper holder hardware anyway.  And now never again will I have to hear the bellowing words coming from the bathroom, "Mom, I can't reach the toilet paper!!!"  Ahhhh.  Seriously...it really is all about the little things.

And just for fun, since I happened to find myself standing in front of a mirror with camera in hand, my baby belly is coming along quite nicely at 15 weeks.  Yeah, the butt's growing too.

Just as suspected, my list of things to do in the toyroom is growing not shrinking.

Here's what I started out with:

Make handprint art with kids
Paint frames
hang the artwork
buy a curtain rod
sew window treatments
paint the bench
paint the bookcase
organize the game cubbies
find a BIG clock
find new storage for blankets
make a chalkboard

I'm making progress, except now I've added:

sew curtains for game storage
find chairs for craft table
build shelves in closet

Completed project is a foreign concept around here.  Good thing I enjoy the process.

So here's what IS done:

I got myself a little (24 inches!!!) clock for my birthday.  I'm sure it's exactly what Reas would've picked out for me had I given him the opportunity.  It was a joint effort, meaning I selected, and he paid.  Thanks honey!

Are these colors fabulous, or what!

I finished the window treatments, lining and all.  Sorry about the horrible lighting.  I really prefer floor length curtains, but considering this is a room that is often filled with unsupervised rugrats, I was too chicken to hang long drapes.  That "twist yourself up in the curtains" business would be much too tempting.

Cheater tip: use an old sheet for the lining.  It's cheaper and it's already hemmed.

I painted my $5 dollar bench with some "Oops" paint from Wal-Mart.

And finally, I tackled another wall.  There are huge walls in this room.  Big walls are so hard to decorate without big stuff.  Big stuff obviously costs more.  Fortunately, my thriftstore stars were aligned and I found BIG.  It all needed a little help though.

This $2 sign had the perfect bones for something...

I still had 2 more of these stars waiting around to be used...

A $3 shelf is always a good find...

All my treasures got a spraypaint facelift, then I put it all together.

I found the cute window mirror at a yard sale 4 years ago for $2!   It's been painted about 12 different colors because I keep moving it around.  I'm trying out black for a while.

I sprayed the sign with chalkboard paint and modpodged paper around the border.  I plan on totally brainwashing my kids with this sign.  I've already got a list of lovely little thoughts to put in their heads.

This entire wall cost $7, including the mirror which technically I shouldn't have to include since I already had it, but I will.  The paint and paper was all leftover from other projects.  Wahoo!

I found this awesome little...um thing at Goodwill. I don't really know what it's called. I'm sure it was never intended to be an art caddy, but such is the life of Goodwill merchandise. I LOVE it!

And there's the present state of my toyroom progress.
I'll start up again in January.
For now, I've got the major Christmas craft itch and I'm decking my halls.

Complete with a whole lot of fa la la la la-ing.

Today was a day of all days...for a few reasons.  First, PERFECT weather.  It could not have been any more gorgeous.  Second, my big girls and I went out and partied for the afternoon and hit some of Vegas' hot spots...that would be ahem, Goodwill, the Discount Mall  (which I only just learned about today), and DI of course.  Such good company and I'm telling you these girls are definitely DIYers in training.  First let me just share this little picture with you...

This was taken as we were heading out for our shopping extravaganza.  Are they dressed to kill or what!  I know.  The sunglasses are killin' me too.

The highlight of the day, hands down was when Maggie picked up this, um, THING.  I don't even know how to describe it and have absolutely no idea what it was, but I can say it was made of metal.  That I know. Anyway. she picked it up, turned it around a couple of times and said, "Mom, I bet we could make this cute!  Maybe by cutting this part off and then painting it.  We could put flowers in it or something."  Now THAT was a moment.

We didn't buy the metal thing because I could not for the life of me think of what to do with it (I talked her out of the flower idea).  Maybe I should have, and let Maggie have a go at it.  So metal thing stayed, but plenty came home with us.  Let me share some of my favorites.

A set of 4 bamboo-ish placemats, although I won't be using them as such.

A totally gorgeous frame... you can't tell how big it is in the picture.  Those are all 4x6" openings so it's pretty dang big.  And the frame is so big and chunky. Love love.  Imagine it white with a bit of antiquing and dark wood peaking through.

And another frame.  And again this picture is totally not doing it justice.  Believe me it's awesome.  It's like 2 inches deep, almost more like a shadow box with glass.

And my favorite... a lovely, yes it is lovely or will be after I'm through with it anyway...storage cabinet.
The best part about it is what's on the inside, but you'll have to wait to see that part.

Maggie and Claire found themselves quite the treasures as well.  Claire fell in love with a pink plastic blowdryer for her 100% bald baby dolls.  25 cents.  How could I say no?  There was only a minor set back when we got home and she realized that it wasn't real.  Maggie got herself a groovy pair of zebra striped sunglasses.  I know I'm her mom, but they actually look stinkin cute on her.  Only an 8 year-old...yes only.

So there you have it.  Our fun girly day out on the town.  And now I'm totally pumped to start on my new projects.

Until next time.

Maybe this is common knowledge, maybe not. Hack the handle off of a way too country- looking wicker basket and you'll have a new updated look instantly. It's that simple. I've done it lots. Depending on how thick the handle is you might be able to use a steak knife from the kitchen drawer or you may need a little hand saw. Either way, it's easy easy. So before you send your old baskets out the door with the give-away stuff (especially the ones with the perfect shape that fit in that little spot), give it a try. It's like a cool magic trick.

I'm in project overload right now. So let's momentarily take a break from Maggie's room. I am still making progress, I just got a little distracted.

I love it when other people's vinyl lettering signs become old, messed up and unloved. I guess I'm kind of mean that way. But when they send their old signs to the thrift store for me to happen upon, it just makes me so happy.

I found this one about 6 months ago and have been lovingly holding onto it until I could help it find it's purpose in life. It was $1. Look at those beautiful routed edges. And since I don't own a router and probably wouldn't know how to use it if I did, I love taking advantage of someone else's routed board.

A few weeks ago I found these corbels, and could absolutely not pass them up for 75 cents each.

I decided to put these two thrifty finds together and ended up with a beauty... for $2.50. Can't beat that! It definitely pays to be patient - and collecting junk for a hobby doesn't hurt either.

I think this stuff was made for eachother. Don't you think? And it was definitely made to display my favorite green duck who now happily smiles at me everytime I check the time.

I just had the BEST thrift store night. Possibly one of my best ever. I'm still shaking with excitement and nearly hyperventilating. After a not so good day with the saddy crying babe, Reas shooed me out for an outing of my own. Ok, actually I told him I was going, but still. He was happy to take over. I started out at DI, of course, and came away with pure delight.

I've been dying to replace the boring beastly brass light of a thing on the outside of the house by the driveway since before we even moved in, but couldn't bring myself to fork out the $60 or more to do so. And oh oh my. There was a reason why. Subconsciously I just knew there would be something out there. I got this baby for $2!! I was too excited and forgot to take a picture of the BEFORE. She was a rusty bronze color. Now, after her little paint job she's ready to out shine 'em all.

NEXT. Now, you have to understand. I have this thing for ladders. I'm not sure how it all came about, but it's kind of weird. I've been itching for years, literally, to find me the perfect little ladder or maybe a few of them if my stars would all align just right. I found one TONIGHT. It was right there waiting for me to bring it home. Five smackers later and it's the newest member of the family - and it doesn't cry. Ever.

Now. If I could only decide where to put it.

It could be used for a strictly functional purpose and add a bit of shabby charm to the kids' bathroom.

Or...it could serve a purpose, but still make a fashion statement.

Or...it could just sit there looking good and telling the world, "I'm sitting here because this girl's got a thing for me."

I'm attempting to hide those disturbing electrical cords. Hmmm. I'll have to work with that a bit.

What to do, what to do?

Next. Yes there's more! I've seen jewelry trees out and about in blogland. I've been thinking about finding one for the girls' room. Funny how sometimes you just have to think really hard and then kabamm! there it is. That is - if you're willing to work with what you stumble across. Like this lovely, crunched up, hot pink Easter egg tree -EGGS INCLUDED! Probably not worth its .75 cents, but it was EXACTLY what I had in mind. Perfect size for a jewelry tree.

After fluffing and painting, I'm quite pleased with the results. And now Maggie is excited to put her jewelry away in its special little place.

And last of all, this is seriously the cutest little $1 egg collecting basket with the chicken wire and all. Although I don't have immediate plans to hit the ranch, I think it does a darn good job collectings books. And when my farmgirls call me up one day, I'll totally be prepared.

Then there were other things like a huge square down pillow form - who could possibly pass that up? And another little square tile to add to my collection. I just know I'll find something to do with them sooner or later. In the meantime, we might need to add on an extra bedroom for storage space.

All of these TREASURES for $10.75!

Now I'm off to bed to dream about light fixtures and ladders.

Or at least they USED to have clocks, until I made my run. Maybe you remember back when I posted about my mysterious connection with DI. That special bond that only a dedicated shopper can have with her favorite store. So explain this. Recently, Reas and I were discussing our need for a few more clocks around the place. My first thought, "OK, I'll check DI next time I'm there." I never remembered seeing clocks there in the past, but...

Here's what I've ended up with! Can you believe it?!?!? Yes, another miracle.

And to top it off, my kids will be learning their Roman Numerals. Really, could I have asked for more? Don't think so.

I'm considering going into business. You know, you give me your shopping list and I'll make your wildest dreams come true - for DIRT CHEAP!!!!! okay. Not really, but if anyone ever wants to tag along, I'm game.

Man, I love a good deal.

I've recently discovered that I'm a huge sucker for tin buckets and containers of any shape, size, or color. I didn't realize that not everyone is as enamored with these things as I am until I was given one by a friend who DIDN'T WANT IT! What!?!?! Of course I said I'd take it off her hands - I could only think of about 18 different uses for it. They're great for making ugly clutter look almost organized and even a bit charming, I think. Doesn't everyone need a little more of those tricks up their sleeve, or am I the only concealer around here? So I started counting all my little tin friends around the house and stopped at 15. Really - the possibilities are endless.
Who doesn't need a lovely "toiletry tin"?

Life wouldn't be complete without a "rag tin."

Or how about a "kitchen gadget tin?" OK I think this actually ceramic, but it could have just as easily been metal.
And I know you all must have a "back of the toilet tin" - originally a flower pot.

Look! I'm even passing on the joy of tinning to my children!

It's Christmas - let's celebrate by filling a tin with glass ornaments! Afterall, they can't hang on the tree anymore.

Then of course, there is the "have on hand tin" just in case you need one in a pinch.

I know I am NOT normal. But seriously, If you have a problem zone, throw it all in a bucket. It will make you feel better....at least until the bucket starts to overflow. Then you'll have to sort a bit. But for the time being...PROBLEM SOLVED. And if you're thinking you might like to become a fellow tin lover, don't waste your money at "real" stores. I got all but one of these at one thrift store or another. Ahhhh. How lovely.

I think I must be making up for lost time while being sick because I can't sit still. If I'm not right in the middle of a project, then I feel lost. I'm sure it won't last long, with my growing belly and all. But for now, it's loads of fun.

Last week we had the bathrooms and laundry room tiled!!! After moving in in January, we knew the floors needed to be replaced right away, but there wasn't much left in the budget so we tried those peel and stick vinyl squares. Would NOT recommend them if you can avoid it, even if the fixer uppers on HGTV swear by them. They look nice at first, but don't be deceived - it won't last. So, we SAY we got tile for my birthday, but really it's because the in-laws are coming for Thanksgiving - shhh, don't tell. Being the crazy go-getter that I am, I always love a good excuse to get projects done. So when Reas had to pull the washer and dryer out, I thought it would be good timing to finally paint the very boring white walls.

Here's my very litte 5x7 foot laundry room prison before receiving a little love. Exciting, eh?

After painting the walls a very lovely shade of green (which I made up myself, mixing 3 random paint colors sitting in the garage) I stood back and had an epiphany right there in my laundry room. Basically, it was..."I spend A LOT of time in my laundry room, and this drabby place is doing nothing for my self esteem. In fact, I'm pretty sure my mental health is at risk being locked up in here all the time. It may be a laundry room, but does that mean it has to be ugly, boring, and personality-less? NO!!!!" So what to do? Well, if your name is Carrie then your next stop is DI followed by a trip around the neighborhood looking for treasure trash. And wowzers!!! It was a good day in the neighborhood.

I found this ultra ugly 6 foot shelf with a sign on it that said, "FREE. Please take me home." Well, alrighty. I think I will. It turned out to work like a CHARM. I continue to stay awake at night wondering what the heck this little amoeba shaped cut-out design is supposed to be.

Maggie says it looks like Pooh Bear. Um...not quite seeing it.

I hacked the shelf apart and bought some new shelf supports. Cheap-O Wal-Mart ones, but they work.

This is my little red hangy thingy that I am quite fond of. It's actually the front piece of a drawer from my childhood dresser. I had that thing so long that I just couldn't part with it - or ALL of it at least. It pretty much fell apart in my hands, as you can see. But here it is, being all useful like. I glued on an extra knob in the middle.

I found this super cute yellow pot set at DI - not sure what to do with them quite yet, but they make me smile nonetheless.

So with the new shelving originating from the sidewalk, my DI beautifying accessories, and some stuff I already had, I now have a laundry room oasis. If only there were room for a comfy chair.

So you ready for this?! Project total - $5.50!!!! Excluding the new floor of course. Oh!! The new floor - here it is.
