Here's a fun little afternoon boredom buster if your little busters are getting bored like mine (how's that for a tongue twister - made it up myself. Bet you'd never guess.)

Homemade icecream in a baggie

For each person:

1 sandwich size baggie and 1 gallon size storage bag.
1/2 cup of milk, cream, or half-and-half
a dash of vanilla extract or 1 tsp of Hershey's syrup
2 tsp. of sugar
1 plastic spoon

For the group:

Several bags of cubed ice and rock salt.

1.  Combine the milk, sugar, and vanilla or chocolate syrup into a sandwich size baggie.  Seal TIGHTLY.
2.  Shake/squish the baggy for one minute to mix contents.
3.  Place the baggie inside the gallon size bag and fill that bag 1/2 full of ice.
4.  Pour about 1 cup of rock salt into each large bag.  Seal it.
5.  Mix and churn the bag at a fast pace until the contents have solidified.
6.  When finished, dispose of large bag and eat the icecream right out of the baggie!

Poor Ty was sick this day, but he mustered up the energy to come to the table for a bit.

Helpful tips from one who has actually made this (that would be me):

* Don't do this activity with only one adult and lots of little kids.  The churning and shaking gets tiring.  We did it when Reas was home fortunately, and we both ended up churning a bag in each hand.  All that ice gets heavy after a while.

* Start to finish the whole process takes maybe about 45 minutes.  I'd say it was at least 10 minutes of good mixing before the icecream thickened.  We found the easiest way to churn was to lay the bag flat and massage the baggie into the ice - it's an art form.  Looks kind of like this:

*Go easy on the churning or you'll end up puncturing one of your bags...we learned this the hard way.

*You may want to add an extra teaspoon of sugar if you make vanilla.  The chocolate was sweet enough with only the 2 tsp. the recipe calls for because of adding in the syrup, but the vanilla needed a bit more.

* Make sure your baggie is sealed tight, or you'll end up with salty icecream. Blah!  I ended up squeezing mine into a bowl because I kept tasting the salt from the outside of the baggie.

*We made strawberry also.  I blended up fresh sugared strawberries in the blender and then added about 1/4 cup of the syrup right in with the other ingredients in the baggie.

* We used about 10 lbs. of crushed ice and all of a 4 lb. box of icecream salt for 5 servings.

Yes, you could achieve the same result (in less time and a bit less money) by heading to the grocery store for a box of any flavor icecream, but that would be cheating.  Seriously, the kids had so much fun and we filled up part of an afternoon that would have otherwise been uneventful.  Go for it moms!  Do it for the kids.
